Small Incidences, Big Problems

And now time for a little bit of social commentary…

This weekend I went with a friend to the games center in Canal Walk, Cape Town. While standing in the line (for game tokens) for a couple of minutes I noticed an adolescent, black male also in the line a little way off to the right. He was positioned before us and should have been served first. When we reached the front the lady at the till, at the danger of sounding cliche: ‘a little old (white) lady’, completely disregarded the young black boy and served my friend (a white male) first. We, of course, called her out on her mistake and the situation was rectified. This may seem petty but it is not the first time I have observed a situation such as this one and I’m sure it won’t be the last. Clearly this is not an act of outright racism but it represents an issue that has not yet been worked out of society. Until this, and similar instances, are completely eradicated from our human nature (yes, in my opinion behaviors such as this seem to be inborn in certain individuals) we will not live in a fair and balanced world.

Have you witnessed any similar situations that boiled your blood?
